Scope

CINERGY consists of 4 work-packages, listed in Table 1 and described hereafter. Management of the project is handled in WP1, while research will be carried out in WP2 and WP3 by the 11 early-stage researchers in the form of PhDs, and in WP4 by the 3 experienced researchers.

Work Package 1

Work package 1 (WP1) deals with management and organisation of the training network.



Work Package 2

A generic approach for urban energy modelling will be developed and criteria for urban energy analysis will be defined. An innovative 3D geo data server will structure the information for different levels of detail of modelling. The work includes a sensitivity analysis of uncertainty propagation, the definition of data interoperability and standardised interfaces. The analysis methodology is applied to the two case study cities. For a higher level of European integration of the PhD mentoring, each research fellow will be supervised by two academics from two different European countries. The secondment structure emphasises the inter-sectoral exchange between industry and academia, as it ensures each fellow will spend time in both the private sector and academic institutions.



Work Package 3

The second group of ESR’s focuses on urban energy modelling. Interfaces between detailed physical modelling tools and urban scale modelling will be created and the flow of information between different tools will be organised. Detailed modelling and validation by monitoring data will provide a basis for smart grid optimisation and renewable supply integration, building modelling and demand-side management. The introduction of smart grids implies high time resolution and detailed spatial resolution with high resolution modelling of buildings and electrical power.



Work Package 4

Three experienced researchers will work on 3D data modelling (ER1), optimisation methods (ER2) and IT infrastructure and software integration (ER3), which takes place in Work Package 4. These ERs will structure and supervise the two thematic groups of early stage researchers. This will ensure a high level of integration of software architecture and integrate the professional requirements of the industrial partners. ER1 will be based at the coordinating institution in Stuttgart and will be responsible for the setup and quality management of the 3D city models needed for the two case study cities. ER2 will be based at the EPFL in Lausanne (close to Geneva) and will work on the development and support of optimisation tools and methods used by the ESR’s. ER3 will be based at AIT in Vienna and will be responsible for organising the common urban simulation platform, from which inputs are provided to different simulation tools. Located in the vicinity of the case study cities, ER2 and ER3 will be responsible for communication, data access and process structuring amongst the many stakeholders in the city administrations and utilities. They will be responsible for the preparation of a coherent data model describing the case study cities, which is crucial for subsequent use by the ESRs to apply their specific modelling capabilities.
